Frequently Asked Questions

When does the Athletic season start?

The season usually starts March/April and continues through to September/October.  No Club Competition Days are held during school holidays.

What day and time do you meet?

We meet every Friday afternoon between 3.30pm and 5.30pm at the Wally O’Grady Oval, Johnston Street, Sarina.   Inter-Club meets and Carnivals are held through out the year.  Please see the 2014 Away Meets page for more details.

Can I let my child have a go to see if they like the sport before paying the membership fee?

The club offers 2 trial days at our Club for a fee of $4 per day before you are required to register. A day registration must be filled out prior to commencement of any events. Full registration fees must be paid in full on the 3rd day before taking the field for insurance cover, Monies paid for trial will come off full fees upon full membership.

I don’t know anything about athletics, how can I help?

Athletics requires a lot of Officials to run smoothly and stress free every week for the benefits of the athletes.  We can never have too many willing helpers.  All of our Officials are volunteers either because they enjoy officiating, want to put something back into the sport or want to help their sons and daughters.

The Club is appealing for more people to assist by becoming helpers or age marshals or even officials.  You don’t have to be qualified to help and in the beginning you don’t even have to know the rules – we will teach you.  After all, we all had to start somewhere.

Perhaps you could be asked to rake the Long Jump pit, role back the Shot Put, help put up the High Jump Bar or Time Keep – nothing too difficult to start with.  All you need for this is enthusiasm and a desire to assist the athletes.

What events do we run?

Typically the events are Sprints, Middle Distance, Hurdles, Shot Put, Discus, Javelin, High Jump, Long Jump and Triple Jump.  This varies due to age limitations.

Do I have to be a good athlete to compete?

NO! Athletics is for anyone who just wants to get out there and have a go.  We cater for any athlete aged from turning 4 this year to 100+.  We encourage the athletes to strive to better their own PB or Personal Best.

How old do you have to be to join?

Children start Prep now at 4 turning 5years old so we try to cater for this, however we require the parent/gaurdian to supervise their child and help with activities. With this parent support your child can start as young as 3 if their is older siblings at the club.(Conditions must be followed)

Is it a First, Second and Third placing system?

No.  On Club Competition days, the athlete is awarded 1 point for each event they participate in and a further 2 points if the athlete achieves a ‘personal best’ performance during that event.  Points can also be earned at Inter Club meets and Carnivals.  The points are added each week and at the end of the season the person with the most points in each age group is recognized.   Please see the Achievement Recognition page.

It is part way through the season, is it too late to join?

No!  It is never too late to join.  Just come along on on Tuesday afternoon or phone one of the contacts for more information.

Where can I get more information?
